“Disco”
“I saw you this weekend.” Says one of my 18-year-old students.
“Oh you did? I replay. I quickly try to figure out what I did last weekend. All I did was go to the mall and out to the discos. Hopefully she says me at the mall.
“Yes. You were out at Moomba drinking and dancing.” She says while shuffling her feet and waving her hands in the air.
“Why didn’t you come over and say hi to me?”
“I...

“California Accent”
“¿Qué tal?”
“Bien,y tú?”
“Bien. I think you have class with me now.” Pepe, the PE teacher, says to me.
As we walk to the gym Pepe and I chat about my time in Spain so far. “Have you found a flat yet?
”“No, but Clara and I are going to look at one during break today.” I tell him.
“I think the kids are going to have a hard time understanding your California accent,” He says to me.
“They are...
“Adrienne vs. Adrianna”
“Quiero una pequeña pizza con salami.” I tell the lady at Pizza Roma.
“Vale (ok)” She says “¿Qué es tu nombre?”
“A-d-r-i-e-n-n-e” I say v-e-r-y slowly. She looks at me quizzically. It is a look I’ve become familiar with since arriving in Spain. She is thinking “who is the world would name their kid THAT?”
“Quince minutos” I sit down on a stool near the counter to wait for my pizza.
“¿Tu eres...

“El Paso”
“It’s strange that we’re taking an American girl to the one and only American restaurant in Talavera.” Clara and Ivan say to me.
“Just a little.” I tell them. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that “El Paso” is decorated with cacti, cowboys, and cigar store Indians but, why the 80’s music? I think the goal is a rustic western saloon, certainly not the Texas depicted in the 1980’s TV show,...

“Teacher’s Lounge”
“Adriana, did you get anything to eat?”
“Yeah, I tried some of the Spanish Omelet. It’s my favorite food in Spain so far.”
“Good, good. Today is Alberto’s birthday,” she says as she points out Alberto to me.
“He is going to… I don’t know how to say it in English, but this is his last year.”
“Ah, he’s going to retire after this year,” I say to her.
“Yes! So we are having food for that.”

"Bitch vs. Beach"
”Hey, hey, hey, speak English!” I admonish a small group of 12-year-old boys in my class.
“Ahhhh, yes, yes, Adrienne. We Speak English,” replies Fernando.
“I want to go to the bitch” he exclaims.
“That sounds like fun,” agrees Alejandro.
“Wait. Where do you want to go?” I hesitantly ask.
“The bitch.” Fernando...
"The Hunt"
I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. It’s not going to be that hard finding a place to live, I told myself. I mean I found one in NYC without running into a craigslist killer. Then again it was my brother’s friend’s friend’s apartment. If only I had been that lucky again in my apartment search.
“Hola! Soy Adrienne. Llamo para la habatacion en el piso,” I said into the$15 dollar phone...

"Biber Fever"
I start calling role after Monica, the 3rd year English teacher, says, “I told the students to prepare an introduction about themselves for class today.”
“Lara.” I call out.
“Hello. My name is Lara. I am 14-years-old and I have Biber Fever!”
“Selena?”
I also have Biber Fever.” All four girls in the 3rd year English class are all sick with Biber Fever!
“Ok. Adrienne do you like Justin...
